Working with Vulnerable Groups challenges GPs to consider that all patients are not equal in terms of need, and that therefore GPs may have greater responsibilities to some patients than to others. Designed to resolve this tension in the work of GPs, the book presents chapters on the homeless, Travelling communities, refugees and asylum seekers, sexual orientation and transgendered people, patients in secure environments, older people, patients with intellectual disabilities, and adolescents. Working with Vulnerable Groups defines social exclusion and health inequalities, and discusses how GPs can deliver care to their disadvantaged patients. The book ends with a chapter that discusses the imminent organisational and ethical challenges caused by changes in the NHS. GPs and other members of the primary care team will find this book invaluable in helping their most vulnerable patients. Why is it needed? This book will make it easier for all doctors to engage in the care of those patients who need care most and to realise the intense rewards both personal and professional that can result. This book is also for those who feel that working in primary care despite all its rigours and stresses is a privilege. If like the chapter authors you wish to better help those presenting in primary care as vulnerable but feel as if you sometimes lack the necessary knowledge and skills required, then this book is for you. It aims to guide the reader towards a better understanding of a variety of vulnerable groups so that the care we offer may be more tailored to their needs. This will allow the reader to offer help that is more useful and effective than that offered by the well-motivated generic practitioner.

Being a Doctor is much more than simply providing medical care. This book aims to increase the resilience and wellness of doctors, helping the profession to provide better care for patients, through a deep and thoughtful approach to clinical work. It explores areas that can challenge clinicians in all stages of their career: the doctor – patient relationship, adverse outcomes, the 'heartsink' experience, and functional illness. The authors also introduce self-care of the doctor and patient safety, two important issues for modern medicine. This is a unique text that draws links between the philosophy of modern medicine and clinical tasks such as consulting skills, the doctor patient relationship, patient safety, reflective practice and doctors' self care. It is written in an accessible style and is firmly grounded in real-life clinical and teaching experience. The authors believe each doctor, as a person, is inseparable from the task of delivering medical care. Enhancing our ability to deliver that care is essential for patients, communities and society. Just as patients need 'whole person' care, the profession needs 'whole person' doctors. Being a doctor, and deriving meaning from clinical experience, are at the heart of this book.

This new edition of Medical Statistics Made Easy 2nd edition enables readers to understand the key statistical techniques used throughout the medical literature. Featuring a comprehensive updating of the 'Statistics at work' section, this new edition retains a consistent, concise, and user-friendly format. Each technique is graded for ease of use and frequency of appearance in the mainstream medical journals. Medical Statistics Made Easy 2nd edition is essential reading for anyone looking to understand: * confidence intervals and probability values * numbers needed to treat * t tests and other parametric tests * survival analysis If you need to understand the medical literature, then you need to read this book. Reviews: "This book helps medical students understand the basic concepts of medical statistics starting in a 'step-by-step approach'. The authors have designed the book assuming that the reader has no prior knowledge. It focuses on the most common statistical concepts that are likely to be faced in medical literature. All chapters are concise and simple to understand. Each chapter starts with an introduction which consists of “how important” that particular statistical concept is, using a 'star' system. A 'thumbs-up' system shows how easy the statistical concept is to understand. Both these systems indicate time-efficient learning allowing yourself to focus on areas you find most difficult. Following this, there are worked out examples with exam-tips at the end of some chapters. The last chapter, 'Statistics at Work', shows how medical statistics is put into practice using worked out examples from renowned journals. This helps in assessing the reader’s own knowledge and gives them confidence in analysis of statistics of a journal. In conclusion, we would recommend this book as an introduction into medical statistics before plunging into the deep 'statistical' waters! It gives confidence to the reader in taking up the challenge of understanding statistics and [being] able to apply knowledge in analysing medical literature." Stefanie Zhao Lin Lip & Louise Murchison, Scottish Medical Journal, June 2010 "If ever there was a book that completely lived up to its title, this is it…Perhaps above everything, it is the chapter layout and design that makes this book stand out head and shoulders above the crowd. At the beginning of each chapter two questions are posed – how important is the subject in question and how difficult is it to understand? The first is answered on the basis of how often the subject is mentioned / used in papers published in mainstream medical journals. A star rating is then given from one to five with five stars implying use in the majority of papers published. The second question is answered by means of a ‘thumbs up’ grading system. The more thumbs, the easier the concept is to understand (maximum of five). This, of course, provides a route into statistics for even the most idle of uneducated individuals! Five stars and five thumbs must surely indicate time-efficient learning! At the end of each chapter exam tips (light bulb icon!) are given – I doubt anyone could ask for more! The whole way in which the authors have written this book is commendable; the chapters are succinct, easy to follow and a pleasure to read…Is it value for money? – a definite yes even at twice the price. Of course I never exaggerate but if you breathe, you should own this book!" Ian Pearce, Urology News, June 2010

From reviews: "Its warm and familiar style of writing makes it accessible for all. Throughout each of the 29 chapters, there was a real feel that the authors knew what was needed of you… Many of the questions I spent hours flicking through appendices in other books for were clearly answered here.... There is a nice feel to this book. It is as if someone has sat down and really thought about each chapter. It feels more like your clever friend than a textbook. Current curriculums have been considered, as have common themes and questions… In conclusion, although I have always believed that examination topics, with all randomness and occasional obscurity, can and never will be fully covered by a solo text, this book comes close. It is an excellent core text for anyone needing to learn physics in anaesthesia." European Journal of Anaesthesiology , April 2014 "Overall, Physics in Anaesthesia succeeds in providing a concise and easy to read review text covering what has historically been a dry and difficult to present topic. The book is easy to understand and sufficiently covers most topics one would expect from such a book. It seems well suited for those studying for exams, but it can also serve as a good reference text for all levels of anesthesia providers." Anesthesiology , September 2013 "This is an excellent refreshing and practical text when compared with various older textbooks on physics for anesthesia…. The text is written in a concise, uncomplicated, and easily understood manner, and representative clinical scenarios are often used…. In my view, this is a superb teaching textbook on basic physics…. I would recommend this textbook to our Anesthesia Post-Graduate Program!" Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (2012) 59: 1161–1162 "…a refreshing change from the more traditional textbooks with their pages of derivations and small, bland, obscure figures…" Technic: The Journal of Operating Department Practice, May 2012 Volume Issue 3 "…this text provides a fantastic resource for those wishing to consolidate their learning… A major strength of this book is its clear writing style. The well organised text is supported by excellent diagrams and highlighted key terms. There are clear learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, with a short summary and a multiple choice question test at the end… Overall, this is an excellent resource and essential revision tool." Nursing Standard , June 2012, 30: vol. 26 no. 41 "This is a book specifically for anesthesia professionals written by Anesthetists, Physicists and Perfusionists. After reading the book cover to cover I can say without reservation, it is most certainly the easiest book on physics I have ever read. The simple and intuitive layout, easy to understand diagrams, relevant objectives and the quizzes at the end of each chapter help me expand my understanding of topics I was already a master of. That is saying something. This book is not just a 'must have' for students of anesthesia and any prospective anesthesia students looking to brush up before training but also for the working Nurse Anesthetists as a quick and easy to use reference." www.nurse-anesthesia.org, June 2012 Physics in Anaesthesia caters especially for those who consider themselves non-physicists. It covers the FRCA syllabus in an informative and accessible way from the very basics, and provides an important link between theory and practice. Worked examples highlight the relevance to clinical practice, and along with graphs and charts, make the basics of physics understandable not only to doctors, but also to operating department practitioners and students. It does not assume that readers will have A level physics. Two different types of self-assessment questions at the end of each chapter will test understanding of the key concepts, while a summary section for each topic is ideal as a rapid refresher, highlighting any problem areas.

Authored by a therapist with extensive experience and expertise with the subject matter, who is also in long-term recovery from addiction and sexual abuse himself.Details the incredibly harmful effects of child sexual abuse on the psychological development of young men and how it distorts their sexuality and sense of self.Whether it’s downing a bottle of vodka or watching porn for hours on end, addictive behaviors change the way people feel and provide a buffer from reality that can seem like salvation for trauma survivors who are plagued by intrusive thoughts, out-of-control feelings, and body memories—all of which take them away from the present moment and back into the darkness and fear of their past.Describes the numerous ways in which young men with co-occurring addiction and trauma related to sexual abuse don’t fit the traditional approaches to addiction treatment, frequently leading to multiple failed treatments, which can be re-traumatizing. Based on the ever-increasing understanding of the neuroscience of addiction and trauma, there is a growing body of scientific research providing evidence that these disorders change brain functioning and structure in profound ways. Articulates a variety of effective experiential treatment assignments and exercises. The key to effective treatment of co-occurring addiction

We live in a time where treatment of addiction is transitioning from being criminalized to being medicalized. We begin a new era where it will be addressed like other chronic, incurable, and potentially fatal medical conditions. The 2012 US Supreme Court decision on healthcare reform providing parity for addiction and mental health treatment is an important part of this process.

Dispelling the myths about how personalisation works for people with dementia living in care homes, this book demonstrates how to introduce Individual Service Funds (ISFs), what works and what doesn't, and how to deal with difficulties and setbacks. Individual Service Funds are one way that people living with dementia can have a personal budget. The authors explain how they went about introducing the principles of ISFs to people living with dementia in a large care home in Stockport, without using any additional funding. They describe the person-centred practices used and the involvement of the council, commissioners, staff and families. Through clear and detailed stories and examples, they demonstrate the dramatic approach to quality of life for people with dementia the approach can deliver. There is a strong emphasis on managerial and organisational issues, including getting staff 'on board', providing adequate support, budgeting, building effective partnerships and implementing change. Providing helpful insights and examples for good practice, this book is essential reading for all those involved in providing personalised care for people with dementia living in care homes, including care staff, care home managers, local authority commissioners, service providers and policy makers.
