В начале тридцатых годов прошлого века сотрудники Полномочного представительства ОГПУ по Уралу стали получать отрывочные оперативные сведения об оставленном в городе Тобольске кладе семьи последнего императора – Николая II. Как сообщалось в донесениях, царская семья оставила в Тобольске на временное хранение украшения и дорогие предметы личного ежедневного обихода. Для проверки информации в Тобольск была отправлена оперативная группа ПП ОГПУ по Уралу – оказать помощь местным чекистам в поиске драгоценностей Романовых. Спустя почти год царский клад был найден. По предварительной оценке экспертов, стоимость сокровищ составила 3 миллиона 270 тысяч 693 рубля. Если перевести эту цифру по курсу того времени в эквивалент драгоценного металла, то его вес равнялся бы 2 тоннам 532 килограмм золота. Дальнейшая судьба найденных в ноябре 1933 года в Тобольске бриллиантов оказалась не менее таинственной. Из Свердловска их отправили в Москву, где они вовсе исчезли. В своей книге «Тобольский узелок» свердловский писатель и краевед Юрий Михайлович Курочкин рассказывает об этой успешно проведенной уральскими чекистами операции. Впервые повесть была издана в 1968 году и можно сказать стала от части предтечей, вышедшей много позже еще одной книги, рассказывающей о сокровищах царской семьи – «Коронация, или последний из романов» Бориса Акунина. Вот, что сам автор пишет в предисловии о своей книге: «Изложенная здесь история одной операции, проведенной уральскими чекистами в начале 1930-х годов, не претендует на документальную хронику. Время не сохранило многих подробностей, без которых немыслима полезная документальность. Поэтому автор счел возможным прибегнуть иногда к смещению событий во времени и пространстве, к вольной трактовке сцен, свидетелей которых уже нет в живых, к домыслу фактов, возможно, имевших место, но не зафиксированных в документах; наконец – позволил себе представить облик и характеры действующих лиц (естественно в документах не отраженных) такими, какими их подсказывал ход событий.
