The author’s starting thesis is that epics are not a refl ection of a certain historical event or a number of such events – they rather represent a set of storylines that, during different periods, can include variegated historical and quasi-historical material. That is the reason why here the names of characters, the temporal and spatial characteristics and the economy of the epic world are analysed in relation to their storyline functions.
